A coiled pot by Monica Young (1929-2004) beneath a quince tree in the Gibberd Garden near Harlow. Sir Fredrick recalled that they were encouraged to buy the pot by Gordon Russell. Quince trees were planted by Mr Newman, a previous owner, and Sir Frederick stated their planting puzzled him until he discovered that Mr Newman had asked nurseryman Tom Rivers to send him some trees and received all their unsold stock. Sir Frederick noted the vista here, 'originally had as its focus two [quince] trees under which was a sculpture by Fred Kormis, Girl and Kid. One of the trees died leaving a gap at the end of the vista. Rather than introduce other plants...I placed a beautiful earthernware pot by Monica Young on the site of the dead tree....I linked the pot to the living tree by a floor pattern of graded flints and stones.'
