The antoninianus was initially minted in silver, but increasingly alloyed with larger amounts of bronze when silver supplies dwindled. This was in part due to the contraction of the Roman Empire, which was no longer conquering new territory, the exhaustion of silver mines and an increasing outlay of coins to pay troops for their loyalty. Each new issue of the antoninianus contained less silver than the last and contributed to spiraling inflation.
