After the deaths of the joint emperors Gordian I and Gordian II in 238, the Roman Senate insisted on making the 13-year-old Gordian (grandson of Gordian I and nephew of Gordian II) caesar and heir to the throne. Gordian III, the youngest emperor of the united Roman Empire, is depicted wearing a laurel wreath - a mark of honor - with the motto, "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG", which loosely translates to "Emperor Gordian, Dutiful Augustus" encircling his bust.
