The Gödenstorf trove consists of 8 206 silver Hohlpfennig coins, 6 712 of which came into the possession of the museum. The majority of the coins was minted in Lüneburg. These coins, with a weight of seven pounds, filled a clay pot to the brim. They were found by a farmer in 1939 in his field. Less than 20 metres away, another trove of 3 000 silver coins had been found in 1907 – a huge fortune that had been buried in the Middle Ages out of fear of plundering. The owner had not been able to raise the treasure again.
