Presented like a scene from a play, the king is featured surrounded by members of the Academy of Sciences, forming a gallery of portraits. The globe, sextants, scientific treatises and map of the Canal des Deux-Mers illustrate the centres of interest of the new academy. The background shows the building of the Observatory, still in the project stage in 1667.
