This poem scroll with illustrations was created in autumn, 1822. The poems were selected from the prose and poetry composed by the literati in the Yanagawa domain. The illustrations were painted by Suho, an official painter of the said domain.
One of the literati is Tachibana Ransai who was a brother-in-law of the 9th lord of the domain. He came back to Yanagawa from Edo (now Tokyo) the year after this scroll was created. After that, he fully started his writing career by publishing ‘Ransai Kango’ and other miscellaneous writings. Though he showed a talent for poetry and writing, he died at a young age of 31. At present, his remaining works are good materials for learning about history and relationship of literati in Yanagawa.
Besides Ransai, other talented literati are listed on the poem scroll here. These include Ando Setsuan who was a representative Confucian scholar of the Yanagawa domain and Makizono Bozan who was a doctor as well as a Confucian scholar.
The painter, Suho probably had a relationship with these men of literature.
