Combs have been used for hair care ever since ancient times. Triplex combs, so-called because of the two outer parts holding the middle teeth section, have existed since the late Iron Age. Long-pronged combs were probably used in hair styles but also perhaps for weaving or as nit-combs. Up to modern times combs were predominantly made of bone. They were produced by bone-carvers in large quantities, waste from comb production is still being found in excavations in Hamburg Old Town (Altstadt).
