“The Good Ship News” was created in 1961 as a news show for children and was hosted by Ralph Vartigan. The show began as a five-minute program that aired before Captain Kangaroo and expanded to twenty minutes because of its popularity. It left the air in 1977, shortly before WTEN switched from CBS to ABC and became obligated to show Good Morning America. Commander Ralph’s co-host, a puppet named Mr. Monkey, gave the weather forecast.
