The godesses Fides (faithfulness) and Pietas (veneration/devotion) join hands in a firm grip on the obverse side of this medal. In the aftermath of the death of King Gustav II Adolf Sweden thought it expedient to negotiate for peace with the kingdom Poland-Lithuania in order to focus on the war against the Habsburg Imperial armies. The various Polish-Swedish wars in the 16th and 17th Centuries were pars of a dynastic struggle between two lines of the Vasa dynasty. The peace of Stuhmdorf, as this medal commemorates, lasted just over 26 years.
