A log-book kept by Frank Trevor Jones aboard HMAS SYDNEY. The title reads 'Commission of HMAS SYDNEY and record of steaming', June 25, 1913 to July 9, 1917. It is handwritten with short daily entries, Jones's personal record of the commissioning of HMAS SYDNEY, her voyage to Australia, the outbreak of war, action at Rabul and sinking of SMS EMDEN.

  • Significance: The attack on SMS EMDEN was a decisive victory for Australia and the Allies in World War I. By the end of October 1914 no fewer than 60 allied warships were pre-occupied with the hunt for the EMDEN in the Indian Ocean, so effective had von Muller's command of her been and the exploits of EMDEN's crew were the most successful of the entire Imperial German navy.
