Located in Historic Cairo, the mausoleum is the burial place and shrine of Al-Imam al-Shafi’i, one of Islam’s foremost scholars and the founder of one of the four main schools of Sunni Islam. This AFCP project involved documentation and conservation of the 13th-century shrine’s exterior walls, decorated interior, and unique dome structure. The shrine is still venerated by members of the local community and visitors.
