Consulting His Lawyer

Benjamin Vautier (German, 1829-1898)1872

Baltimore, United States

A country lawyer in outmoded costume is seated beside a cluttered desk perusing some documents. He appears to ignore the gestures of his client, an elderly peasant whose gnarled hands, toothless grimace and soiled boots reflect the vicissitudes of life.

This low-keyed, carefully delineated interior typifies the work of Vautier, who was noted for emotionally nuanced depictions of rural life.
