In this oval landscape, three figures repose at the edge of a wood. A small stream winds its way through the wood on the right where there is also an open field. Mountains, presumable the White Moutains, appear in the distance. Although Champney is not thought of as being formally affiliated with the Hudson River School, his paintings of Conway Valley and the White Mountains display a close affinity with that tradition. He was acquainted with many of the landscape artists of New York State through their visits to New Hampshire and through exhibitions of their works in Boston.
