The cartoon shows a Bavarian, an Austrian, and a Saxon postilion looking at the railway. As early as 1848, Hof was connected to the Bavarian railway which went to Nuremberg and Munich. The extension of the Saxon state railway to Leipzig followed in 1851. Until then, the postal service, with its stagecoaches and express wagons, provided passenger services for long-distance routes. With the establishment of the railway lines, links to rural areas were restricted to railway junctions.
