This six person picnic set is displayed to highlight the public appeal of the Harbour for spectacle, sport and competition as thousands have flocked to its foreshores to enjoy the ambience. The earliest picnic sets were made from wicker with simple arrangements of flasks glasses and sandwich tins. More lavish sets were made of leather and sumptuously fitted with compartments for plates, saucers, glasses, sandwich boxes, condiment sets, milk bottles, drink bottles, kettles, burners, oil (fuel) containers. Sometimes ceramic butter and preserves pots were supplied with lids secured by leather straps.
