Ian Hamilton Finlay was a Scottish poet and artist, often using neo-classical forms to provide expression for his literary ideas.

The obelisk has strong associations with monuments and with the landscape. The title refers to Charlotte Corday, who murdered Marat in his bath during the French Revolution. Adam Lux fell in love with her but was subsequently guillotined.

Gift of the Contemporary Art Society, 1992
