Cottage Children

William Owen’s success was built on his prodigious output of portraits, but he also painted rustic scenes like this one. These paintings were popular as they presented a pleasing rendering of rural life – here the abundance of nature is hinted at by the vine flourishing around the doorway. This work, with its poor children resting and reading in a pool of sunlight, would have been intended to engender sympathetic feelings from exhibition visitors.
