Cottage for Mrs. Gale in the Suburb of Oak Park, Illinois (Landhaus für Frau Gale im Vorort Oak Park, Illinois)

This home for Mrs. Thomas H. Gale was later considered by Wright to be the predecessor of Fallingwater, his iconic 1935 retreat for Edgar Kaufmann near Bear Run, Pennsylvania. Vaguely comparable to Wright’s 1907 Ladies’ Home Journal home, here the cubiform design of that house is elongated to accommodate a narrow lot and cantilevered terraces and roofs thrust outward in a dramatic fashion, suggesting the active dissolution of the static form. While Wright’s room structures remain somewhat ordinary, the inclusion of these terraces and extensive bands of windows gives the house a dynamic quality, connecting the design to the surrounding environment.
