Yasuo Segawa, who considered picture books to be “the highest form of art that combines pictures and literature,” continued pursuing his own unique artistic expression during his lifetime. He published his first picture book in 1960 and soon garnered international attention with his third book, which was awarded the Grand Prix at the first Bratislava Biennale for Picture Books.
Segawa’s picture book Boshi (A Straw Hat) is based on his personal experience of playing with local children in the mountainous region of Nagano prefecture after leaving the hustle and bustle of the city. This cover illustration shows a monkey wearing a straw hat along with decorative dayflowers and other plants that seem to glow. Upon moving to Nagano prefecture, the artist continuously made sketches of plants and insects, carefully observing the beauty of nature. It was in this way that Segawa discovered the artistic expression he sought.
