Port Adelaide Labor Day Celebrations Sports Programme.
Held on Monday 10 October 1960, Activities at Alberton Oval commenced at 11.00 am and featured trotting, cycling, athletic events and children’s events, parades and marching demonstrations. Printed by Bird Printer, St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide.

- Provenance: Labor Day Celebrations traditionally mark the introduction of the eight hour working day. The eight hour work day was introduced gradually in work places as individual unions won their campaigns.The 48 hour working week was first introduced from 1873 in Adelaide and Port Adelaide. Labor Day celebrations included processions, floats, picnics, sport meetings and cultural events. In early celebrations, Port Adelaide unions joined the celebrations in Adelaide city. In 1900 the Port Adelaide Working Men’s Association decided to hold Labor Day celebrations in Port Adelaide and a strong tradition of activities, including sporting events at Alberton Oval, evolved. By 1960 sporting events to mark the day were well established.
