This bedcover dates from the 17th century and is a fine example of the combination between Indian and Western motifs. The piece was made in India, possibly by Bengali workshops, and traded by the Portuguese through their Indian colonies. The piece is embroidered in chain stitch with brightly coloured silks on a background of dark blue satin. The decoration features different species of flowers and animals. The motifs are arranged around a central medallion containing the figure of a pelican and two-headed eagle with a crown.
