Crew Shirt, Shuttle, STS-1

Except during launch, reentry, and spacewalks when they wear pressure suits, astronauts wear ordinary clothing while in space. For the early shuttle missions, they wore navy blue polo shirts customized with a mission patch, whereas later crews chose various colors and styles. This shirt bears the patch for the first shuttle mission with the names of the orbiter Columbia, commander John Young, and pilot Robert Crippen. The STS-1 mission flew in April 1981.NASA transferred this shirt to the Museum in 2002.
