The image of Christ crucified is a symbolic scene because it evokes sacrifice, redemption and salvation of human beings. It was frequently represented in the American vice-regal world and in this case the iconography features an Expiring Christ. The brightly flesh paintings is distinctive of Quito’s late eighteenth century sculptures.
