Crucifixion

The Christ, slightly bended, surrounded by a white loincloth, is suspended from a bichrome cross and his feet are fixed by two nails on a suppedaneous; at the top, above the arms of the cross, there are the two weeping angelic busts of Michael and Gabriel, while the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist stand on either side of Christ. The Romanesque education of the painter is evident in the garments covered with uniform and flat colors, in the elongated proportions of the bodies and in the composite figures. The painter is not interested in a poignant accentuation of the scene and the figures remain sober and composed, generating a simplified language. The Crucifixion probably formed a series with Stories of the Passion executed at the same time by the same shop, which was torn up in 1956 by the Salesians and dispersed in private collections, but coming from the same convent of San Giovanni Evangelista della Beverara at Regaste San Zeno, Verona.
