The crucifix represents a special conception of that time: Jesus appears as a triumphant. He stands above death: upright, with his head raised, his eyes wide open, his arms horizontal, no stigmata, and his legs aligned parallel.
The more well-known way of depicting “Jesus as Man of Sorrows” only prevailed in the Gothic period. You can see this transformed image of Christ later on at the crucifix of the western rood screen.
