Cryptomeria Japonica or Japanese cedar is a common sight along the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway route from Kurseong to Darjeeling. The soft and insect-repellent timber from the tree was used to box goods such as tea and oranges, which are major produce of Darjeeling. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was originally envisioned to serve as an effective transport of tea from the hills to the market in the plains.
