Cundapanthaka renounced with his older brother. He had trouble remembering the Dharma teachings because of his slow wit and poor memory. When his brother suggested that he should return home, he wept in grief. The Buddha taught him to recite a verse: “Sweep away the dust and remove the dirt.” Later, he attained Arhatship with the understanding that, while the external environment can be cleaned with a broom, the defilements within the mind can only be purified by wisdom. After his attainment, he possessed great supernatural powers and was capable of manifesting in various forms.
