Chen Qiucao born in Shanghai, native of Yinxian(now Ningbo), Zhejiang province. In 1925 he graduated from Shanghai Fine Art School. He was the Founding member and financial supporter of White Goose Painting Research Society. He designed covers for Shanghai Manhua(Shanghai Sketch). He practiced and taught both Chinese and western painting. After 1949 he chiefly lived in Shanghai, where in 1955 he became director of the Shanghai Art Museum. He was the Council member of Chinese Artists Association and the member of Shanghai Traditional Chinese Painting Institute.
