Cycladic collared jar ('kandila')

Collared jar with conical neck, almost semiglobular body with four pierced lugs, and conical foot. The popular name if this vase type in Greek, "kandila", is due to the similarity of its form to that of the hanging icon-lamps (kandilia) in Orthodox Christian churches. All collared jars of known provenance have been recovered from graves. It is true that their considerable weight made them rather inconvenient for everyday use. However, their lugs are often broken, perhaps due to their use in settlements, prior to their deposition in graves.
