Cylinder 4, Glovebox Hip Pack, Protein Crystal Growth Experiment, Shuttle

Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum

Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum
Washington, DC, United States

This container holds two syringes, putty, and tweezers stowed in a small rack. Such equipment was used in protein crystal growth experiments on many Space Shuttle missions. Medical, drug, and agricultural researchers were interested in learning more about the structure of proteins, which form larger, easier-to-study crystals in the microgravity environment of spaceflight. A group of researchers actively involved in experiments for Shuttle flights gave this item and more protein crystal growth equipment to the Museum.
