The Penning trap consists of (at least) three electrodes and allows to store charged particles using a combination of magnetic and electric fields. A magnetic field along the symmetry axis forces charged particles to spiral around the magnetic field lines, while the electric field produced by the three electrodes keeps them trapped in the central electrode.
