Despite these majestic animals' proximity to the viewer, it is not the sheep, but the looming mountain painted in the background that captivates the eye.

Dall's sheep live above the timberline, often in sizable herds. Males usually form smaller bands and mingle with the ewes only during mating season. They do not migrate, and descend from the high mountain ridges only when driven down by snow.

Dall's sheep depend on their keen vision, more than scent or sound, to detect danger. When frightened, they typically seek refuge on the highest and most inaccessible cliffs.
