Dance on the Outskirts of Town

1898

Dallas Museum of Art

Dallas Museum of Art
Dallas, United States

Created by the famous poster designer Théophile Steinlen, this lithograph depicts a working-class dance hall on the fringes of Paris. The powdered and garishly illuminated face of the central woman, who seems to lock eyes with the soldier waiting on the sidelines, suggests her status as a prostitute and exposes the seedier side of such popular entertainment venues.
