A Polish folk dance originating in the 1500s, the mazurka came to represent Polish national pride and dignity. Especially after Frédéric Chopin made this music known in the early 1800s, the dance's popularity spread to the ballrooms of Russia, Germany, France, and England.

Arranged in formal rows echoing the architectural pillars, these young women participate in a dance lesson, most likely in preparation for a society ball.
