Dartmouth, £1 note

1806/1806

British Museum

British Museum
London, United Kingdom

This note was issued by Benjamin Tanner, a shipbuilder. War with France increased the Navy's demand for ships, and Tanner started a bank hoping to raise money to fund expansion of a shipyard. This vignette of ships in dry-dock, anchors and a shield with Tanner's initials bears witness to his optimism. Unfortunately both his businesses failed in 1807, the year after this note was issued.
