Death of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

This painting is one of a set of 20 paintings showing scenes of St. Ignatius’ life, the founder of the Society of Jesus, painted around 1630 by Domingos da Cunha, nicknamed the “Cabrinha”. This particular one features St. Ignatius of Loyola on his death bed in the Professed House of Rome, surrounded by groups of Jesuit priests who assist him. On the top, a vision of the heavenly glory shows him the presence of God’s kingdom.
