An "emergency position indicating radio beacon" is a self-floating transmitter for marking a distress position at sea. The device switches on automatically when immersed in water and transmits data on the damaged ship and its position, and/or a bearing signal, to rescue control centers via satellite emergency frequencies. In this way, casualties can be quickly found and rescued.
