A decal, also known as a transfer, is a decorative print on paper, plastic or cloth that can be transferred to another surface, generally by using water or heat. "Decal" is short for "decalcomania," which originally referred to the process of transferring printed images to pottery. This process originated in England around 1750, and is attributed to a French engraver named Simon Fran퀌_ois Ravenet. Ravenet named his technique "decalquer," which means to copy by tracing.

Today, decals are mainly used as a way of personalizing important objects, such as cars, cell phones, musical instruments, and even walls and furniture. Decals can be elegant and sophisticated, or simply plastic images of popular characters.
