The tradition of making stones like this goes all the way back to the times of Mannerism, where these saw a golden age. They combine art and nature into one. This scene worked into a piece of coal shows a pit with a miner and Saint Barbara.
This sculpture was made by a miner. It could also serve as a decorative centrepiece.
