One of the lesser-known facets of Diego Rivera’s production is his work as an illustrator—for books, magazines, and other publications—which extended from 1906 to 1957.
In the 1930s a strong interest developed in the United States for literary works of the so-called indigenist movement. Diego Rivera participated in this vogue as the illustrator of two books that gained wide circulation in the United States: El Indio, by Gregorio López y Fuentes, and The Land of the Pheasant and the Deer, by Antonio Médiz Bolio. Rivera designed the covers and provided drawings for the title pages and interior illustrations.
