When the mass production of toy vehicles began in the middle of the 19th century, horses powered nearly every vehicle imaginable. A century later, the horse had all but disappeared from America's roads and highways. Before the automobile replaced the work horse, toy vehicles represented the noble steeds that moved people in carriages, goods in carts and wagons, and most impressively, firefighters in pumpers, hose carriages, and hook-and-ladder wagons. These vehicles replicated the massive conveyances that fascinated children who watched the world from the windows of their playrooms.
