Detail of a watercolor sketch for the engraving of the Lichtenhof Estate. Shown in rather austere, clear, simple lines, this stone structure is decorated with corner towers and surrounded by a fortified wall. The draftsman seen from the back is carefully drawn, and it's not hard to see him as the artist himself; equally meticulous is the portrayal of the water surrounding the defenses, the bridge leading to the house, and another nearby structure. The building as shown here had been completely rebuilt after the Margrave Wars, and further damage from the Thirty Years' War had been repaired.
