Spartan women giving shields to their husbands and sons while exhorting them. Setting shows vaulted hall. Six oval medallions surround oblong. Medallions show seated gods, respectively Neptune, Venus, Mars, Zeus, Minerva and Apollo. Quadrangles dispersed obliquely at corners. Left ones contain battle scenes. At right top corner, victor in race of chariots. At right bottom corner, a victoriously racing chariot. Sea god shown at right. Upper part of decoration for wedge shown around right bottom corner; grotesque plant candelabrum with panoply in top center. Verso: representation of same theme outlined in graphite.
