View of the "Design: Vignelli" exhibition, Benetton Galleries, Vignelli Center for Design Studies, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, United States. The "Design: Vignelli" exhibition opened in 2010 at the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, which is also home to their entire professional archives. The exhibition mirrors the "Design: Vignelli" exhibition which toured nine countries between 1989-1993. As with the previous iteration, Lella Vignelli and Massimo Vignelli designed the displays, wrote the descriptive text, and curated the artifacts for the exhibition. It is the last exhibition designed by the Vignellis that is still open to the public. Pictured: Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS) Graphic and Publication Program (1976)

Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS)
New York, Graphic and Publication Program, 1976
A variety of publications—from books to magazines, tabloids to posters—gave the Institute a worldwide visual recognition that became very much a part of its life. The liveliness of the Institute’s programs, exhibitions, and lectures prompted these strong, structured, black and red graphics that evoke revolutionary Constructivist memories. Working with architect Peter Eisenman, the Institute’s founder, was one of the most provocative challenges. Julia Bloomfield coordinated much of this work with care and determination, The Institute’s potters had a thick black band followed by rows of information bans in red. “Oppositions” had a red cover, the books a deep yellow, and “Skyline” strong blacks. The type used throughout was Century Expanded. Even now, the IAUS program is one of our favorites.
