William George Spencer Cavendish (1790-1858) was the 6th Duke of Devonshire. He never married and although he had mistresses, he never had any children. He died at Hardwick Hall.

This image is one of a number collected by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a four volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, a process known as 'Grangerising'. In doing so he created a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county.
