Diadem from La Puebla de los Infantes

Siglo III a.C.

Museo Arqueológico Nacional
Madrid, Spain

Purchased in 1998, this diadem has an articulated structure of the orientalising type, consisting of a central segment with two rows of plaques and another of pendants and two triangular terminals. The repoussé on the ends depicts a ritual hunting scene, with a male figure in a short tunic, apparently armed, between two animal figures, a boar and a canid. The small circular holes at the ends of the triangular plaque were used to attach it to fabric.
The rectangular plaques depict a figure, possibly female, with necklaces, hands on her chest and a long robe whose folds are marked by incisions. This is believed to be the likeness of a Mediterranean goddess with wings folded over her body. Other plaques are decorated with the images of acorns.
Small hollow acorn-shaped pendants hang from the bottom row of plaques.
The triangular terminals link this piece to the diadems from the Aliseda, Mairena del Alcor and Jávea hoards.
It was found with at least two Carthaginian coins, which date its possible concealment to around 230 BC.
