Rafał Jara’s Diagram is an interactive installation, based on computer animation that responds to external stimuli. The project was carried out as part of the exhibition dedicated to Jerzy Ludwiński, titled Filling the Blanks, which took place at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Toruń (from 25 March to 20 May, 2011). The direct reference applied by the author was the diagram Ludwiński made in 1972, which illustrated the phases of art development, in the form of an expanding diagram. A hand-made drawing of the critic was the starting point for Rafał Jara’s private experiment with interactive art. In his experiments, the artist makes an effort to go beyond the schematic standards of graphic design. He is interested in new techniques of animation and typography. The most important element of Diagram is space, in which the audience interacts with the work of art, and vice versa. This interaction is by no means forced, but it seems to be a “by-product” of certain motor skills of audience members, who are present near the work of art, strolling and undertaking natural activities, to which the installation reacts.
