Two angels bring fruits to the Holy Family resting on the flight into Egypt. The fruits allude to the salvation: the apples stand for the Fall, the grapes for the sacrifice of Christ to redeem humanity. Whereas Leu integrates the Holy Family into nature on the left edge of the painting, the central figures of the angels fill the foreground like a planar ornament with no depth.

- Artist Biography: His travels as a journeyman in southern Germany brought Leu, the son of the painter Hans Leu the Elder, in contact with works by Albrecht Dürer and above all Albrecht Altdorfer. Leu probably worked briefly in the workshop of Hans Baldung Grien. From 1514 he was back in Zurich, and he received a number of commissions from churches as a painter and designer of stained glass. His powerful interest in landscape accounts for the appeal of his works.
