Try your hand at diving

Today diving is a popular recreational sport. Modern diving equipment makes it possible to pursue this fascinating underwater experience at almost any location. The images of gliding almost weightlessly through colorful and diverse wildlife in the clear blue water are temptingly beautiful. But this is only one side of diving.

Research diving in full-body wetsuits down into the dark depths of the sea is anything but a pleasant experience. It is an extremely laborious and physically strenuous activity for perfectly-trained specialists. Visitors to the OZEANEUM can get an idea of what it feels like to be a helmet diver, complete with all their heavy duty equipment, in the Exploration and Exploitation of the Seas exhibit. Two original divers’ helmets from the 1970s can viewed up close, and can even be touched and worn. This is a rare opportunity and is often used as a photo opportunity, but it also lets us experience the enormous weight divers must carry when wearing these diving suits. This kind of helmet weighs around 20 kilograms, and the rest of the equipment adds another 80 kilograms.

But museum visitors don’t have to worry about lifting that kind of weight. A special device allows anyone interested – from our smallest to our largest visitors – the lightly touch and wear these bulky diving helmets. Father and son have the opportunity to smile for mom’s camera through their helmets. A good bit of family fun, yes, but it also provides very vivid insights into the world of professional divers.
