In most role-playing games the outcome of an event, known as a check, is determined by a roll of dice. The game Dungeons & Dragons is credited with popularizing the use of polyhedral (many-sided) dice, but all games use them now. Early dice were soft and became unuseable quickly; today players collect sets of colored dice and mix and match.
